Engraving of two damaged wax seals on cords; on the left a knight on horseback with a shield and a pennoned lance, on the right a heater-shaped shield with a horizontal band and a label, inside a ring of lettering
A seal of Saer de Quincy, earl of Winchester, and its counter-seal, as engraved for Henry Laing's Descriptive Catalogue of Impressions from Ancient Scottish Seals (1850), Plate XI, nos. 679-680. A mounted knight bears a shield with a fess and a label of seven points; the counter-seal repeats the shield, inside the legend [SE]CRETUM COMITIS WINTON. Laing dates the document it hangs from to about 1170, and the Commons title follows him, but the word comitis, 'of the earl', places the seal in 1207 or later.Henry Laing, Descriptive Catalogue of Impressions from Ancient Scottish Seals (Edinburgh, 1850); via Wikimedia Commons, seal 1207–1219; engraving 1850 · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
